Current status
What is in the build today, its design limits, and what is not built yet.
On this page
Current is in early development. This page sums up what is in the build today, the limits it is designed around, and what is not built yet.
Release
- There is no installer or public release yet.
- Current runs on Windows x64. Its render and export code uses Windows-only APIs.
In the build today
- A timeline with visual and audio tracks, nested compositions, groups and procedural grids.
- Native text with styled runs, and native shapes with solid or gradient fills.
- Masks, source mattes and keyframes with Linear, Hold and Cubic Bezier interpolation.
- Four effects (Gaussian blur, Drop shadow, Glow and Organic reveal), three blend modes (Normal, Multiply and Screen) and geometry motion blur.
- 2.5D spatial planes viewed by one perspective camera per composition.
- Local transcription with the Parakeet model, with word search.
- CPU preview, and a direct GPU preview path in a separate build.
- MP4 export with H.264 and AAC, using a hardware encoder when the machine supports one.
- MCP editing for external agents, with review, revision checks and shared undo.
- Accessible names on controls, and a high-contrast mode that maps to Windows system colours.
Formats and limits
- Video import: H.264 in MP4, 8-bit 4:2:0, progressive, tagged limited-range BT.709, at a fixed list of constant frame rates. Variable frame rate, HDR, 10-bit, interlaced and other codecs are refused.
- Audio import: 16-bit or 24-bit PCM WAV and AAC inside MP4, mono or stereo, at 44.1 or 48 kHz.
- Images: PNG only.
- Fonts: File > Import media / font accepts TTF and OTF, although its file filter also lists
.ttcand.otc. The Fonts library import accepts collections. - Length: sources, the timeline and export are limited to three hours.
- Frame rate: every composition runs at 30 fps.
- Composition size: changed through the MCP
composition_set_formattool; the Properties panel shows it read-only. - Undo: the undo list keeps the last 64 steps.
- Paste: clip paste works within one project.
- Audio gain: a constant per clip.
- Curves: the workspace curve editor keeps Bezier handles within 0 to 1. Overshoot keys are written through the project file or MCP.
- Text fit: the workspace’s text fit report is a Qt measurement, not an exact export metric.
- Spatial: planes are flat, intersecting planes are not split by depth, and one camera applies per composition.
- Effects on groups: groups and procedural grids take effects and blend modes once they are nested in a composition.
- Export: MP4 with H.264 and AAC, with fixed encoder settings and no quality, bitrate or CRF control. See Export.
- Preview: CPU preview can show fewer than 30 frames per second on very complex full-resolution scenes.
- Agents: the MCP transport is local only, and Current has no built-in chat. Agents cannot accept proposals, change locks, relink assets or import programmable components.
Not built yet
Editing:
- Snapping, and separate sublanes for overlapping clips on one track.
- Paired transitions between clips. Motion treatments write keyframes on one clip.
- Speed change, reverse and freeze frame. Video and audio play forward at normal speed.
- Keyframed audio gain, and audio effects.
- Track visibility, mute, solo and markers.
- Folder relinking, and replacing a source with a different file.
- Controls for keyed font axes in the Inspector.
- Automatic language-aware font fallback.
- True 3D.
- Hardware decoding.
Effects:
- Effect families beyond the four built in, such as Bloom, Film Grain, Colour Basics and Directional Blur.
- Blend modes beyond Normal, Multiply and Screen.
- Camera and spatial motion blur.
Export:
- Dithering, range export, output scaling, an alpha channel, HDR, image sequences and audio-only output.
Coming later in the interface
The interface plan defers these to a later version: a Graph workspace, a light theme, removing the transcription model from inside Current, startup, update, account or cloud preferences, richer history records, snapping and stacked clips, composition size in Properties, and an All media view.
Programmable components
File > Import programmable component… adds clips from the experimental programmable runtime. It needs Node and a Chromium browser from Playwright on the machine. It is an isolated prototype. Effects, blend modes, mattes, spatial mode and motion blur are not available on component clips. Changed package files are refused rather than adopted.
